Role Of The Excavator In Landscaping
The term excavator is broadly applied to any machine used for digging, mining or land clearing. The very first excavator was built in 1888 by the Menck & Hambrock company. Subsequently, excavators have been developed for all types of projects. Eddy the Excavator is a small, suction based remote-controlled excavator that stands just below 5 feet tall and the Bagger 288 is the largest tracked land vehicle on earth.
Excavators are very precise and can perform rugged or delicate operations when a skilled driver is in the cage. With home renovations on the rise, we see more excavators being used for delicate landscaping projects such as building rock retaining walls, irrigation and building rises and water features.
The excavators used for this type of work are typically smaller than the large excavators you would see at construction sites and are referred to as mini-excavators, an example would be the Bobcat 435.
Rock retaining walls. The driver uses the excavator to create steps and then places large, natural stones against the dirt walls. This is a great way to landscape a property that is sloped as you end up with flat stepped areas rather than one sloped hill. This is also good for water drainage as rainwater doesn’t run down the hill.
Stone garden paths. These garden paths are first made flat with the excavator bucket and then the stones are laid out along the path. The use of stones prevents path erosion from traffic and weather.
Water features. Using natural water paths, mini-excavators can be used to dig new channels and funnel water to custom water features built using natural stone.
Custom irrigation systems. Mini excavators, especially those like the Bobcat 435 with “zero swing” can fit into tight spaces to create irrigation and drainage channels.
Land clearing. In small spaces, mini-excavators are invaluable for clearing the land of existing debris and smoothing the land for easier landscape design.
There are many other tasks that can be achieved using a mini-excavator including trail building, tree and stump removal, driveway revitalization (remove potholes and ruts), patios, walkways, steps and outdoor lighting. In the end, it might be more expensive than doing it yourself but it’s faster, easier and more effective than d
